How to Treat an Excessive Earwax Build-up

Earwax removal Wellingborough

Why might I need earwax removal in Wellingborough?

Excessive earwax build-up can be irritating, to say the least, but how can we be sure that our impaired hearing and blocked ears are actually due to earwax and not something else? The symptoms of earwax build-up can be recognised as hearing loss, the feeling of blocked ears, earache, tinnitus (also known as ringing or buzzing in your ears), and vertigo. It’s important to get services for earwax removal in Wellingborough in advance.

As tempting as it may be to use your fingers or things like cotton buds to try and remove the earwax from your ear, it is crucial that you avoid doing this. It will push the build-up further down your ear canal and worsen your symptoms.

How do you ease the symptoms of an earwax build-up?

The question that now remains is: how do you ease symptoms of an excessive earwax build-up without using a cotton bud?

Using home remedies

Earwax will usually fall out on its own. However, if this is not the case and it is impairing your hearing and causing you discomfort, olive oil is a great method to help. Put a couple of drops of medical grade olive oil in your ear up to four times a day. Do this for a maximum of five days or until the build-up clears.

This method can get messy. So, it is recommended to do this either first thing in the morning or just before you go to sleep in the evening. Using a dropper and laying your head to one side for a few minutes, whilst the oil makes its way through the ear canal, is also advised. The earwax build-up should fall out in lumps over the next couple of weeks. This is especially at night, so consider putting a towel on your pillow.

Using ear microsuction

If symptoms still persist after a fortnight, it may be worth considering medical help. This does not mean going to your local spa to get an ear candle or ear vacuum procedure; this involves pharmacy-grade earwax removal, specifically ear microsuction

What is ear microsuction?

Microsuction earwax removal offers instant relief to those suffering from an excessive build-up of earwax. It provides a quick, clean, and pain-free solution. This procedure uses an operating microscope to view your ear canal, whilst a fine low-pressure sterile suction removes the earwax build-up from your ear.

Our ear microsuction procedure

Prior to the procedure, a member of staff will examine your ears. This is to ensure that ear wax is present and can be removed. However, in the event that there is no wax present, they will suggest you go for a full medical evaluation. It will identify any underlying issues that may be prompting your symptoms.

If ear microsuction sounds like a procedure you may be interested in. It is important to know that most GP surgeries will no longer offer an earwax removal service; hence, pharmacies across the country have taken on the responsibility. This treatment is available at our pharmacy, Croyland Pharmacy, and is carried out by licensed audiologists. You can find out more about our procedure here.
