Heading abroad in 2025? Or maybe you’re heading somewhere warm for Christmas to escape the rain? Before you fly, it’s important to make sure your vaccinations are up to date for where you’re travelling to. To avoid getting caught out we always recommend getting your travel insurance and booking travel clinic appointments when you get your tickets, so you’ve got complete peace of mind.
A common vaccine you’ll need to have is the Yellow Fever vaccine and the accompanying certification for entry into the country.
Yellow fever is a serious viral illness spread by mosquitoes in parts of Africa and South America. It can cause mild symptoms or lead to severe, life-threatening complications which is why countries are so strict that you have it.
Not sure if you need it? Speak to our travel clinic team who will be happy to answer all of your questions and create a personalised vaccine schedule for you and your family.
What is yellow fever?
Yellow fever is caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, primarily in tropical regions where these insects thrive. If you become infected with yellow fever symptoms typically take 3-6 days to appear. If you think you’ve been exposed to the disease, here are some common symptoms to look out for:
– High fever
– Muscle pain, especially in the back
– Headache
– Nausea or vomiting
– Loss of appetite
In some cases, the disease progresses to a more severe form, causing jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), liver and kidney issues. Severe cases can be fatal, if you think you’ve been exposed it’s important to seek medical help as soon as you can.
Why you need the yellow fever vaccine
Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for yellow fever and that’s why the best way to protect yourself is through vaccination before you travel.
The yellow fever vaccine provides long-lasting immunity for most people and significantly reduces the risk of infection. In some cases you may need a booster jab, for example if you first got it when you were pregnant, but if you’re unsure if you need a booster you can ask our pharmacy team.
Once vaccinated, you’ll receive an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), to prove you’re covered to whichever country you’re visiting.
Who should get vaccinated?
Anyone traveling to areas where yellow fever is endemic should consider vaccination. This is especially important for people visiting rural or high-risk areas whether there are lots of mosquitoes.
We are a registered centre for yellow fever vaccination and can answer any questions you have about the vaccine, how to stay safe when travelling and can administer the vaccine as part of your travel preparations alongside other vaccines, or on it’s own if that’s all you need.

Countries that require a yellow fever certificate
Several countries demand proof of yellow fever vaccination before entry. This requirement helps prevent the spread of the disease across borders and helps to keep people safe while they travel. Some of the regions where you may need a certificate include Africa and South America.
Countries like Angola, Nigeria, and Ghana require vaccination certificates for travellers coming from or transiting through high-risk areas. nIn South America, countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Peru have yellow fever risk zones. Visitors to these regions should ensure they are vaccinated, as outbreaks can occur unpredictably.
